Senator Asks Apple About Location-Tracking Issues as Experts Weigh In

Senator Asks Apple About Location-Tracking Issues as Experts Weigh In

With much publicity about yesterday's iOS location-tracking issue, a number of voices have already weighed in to provide additional perspective on exactly what is happening with respect to user privacy.

As noted by Ars Technica, U.S. Senator Al Franken sent a letter (PDF) to Apple CEO Steve Jobs yesterday asking for more detail on how consumers' information is being used and why it is not encrypted.
Anyone who finds a lost or stolen iPhone or iPad or who has access to any computer used to sync one of these devices could easily download and map out a customer's precise movements for months at a time. It is also entirely conceivable that malicious persons may create viruses to access this data from customers' iPhones, iPads, and desktop and laptop computers. There are numerous ways in which this information could be abused by criminals and bad actors.

A number of observers have pointed out that Apple did respond to location-tracking concerns last July, noting that such information could be collected, batched, and sent to Apple to assist with generating and refining its database of cellular and Wi-Fi access points for providing location services. Location tracking is also used to aid in targeting iAds to customers based on their geographic region, although this information is not passed on to advertisers.

We mentioned in our initial report that knowledge of this "consolidated.db" file containing the timestamped location information was not new, having been used by forensic analysts associated with law enforcement seeking to determine the whereabouts of a given device (and presumably the person associated with that device) at a given time. One of the people primarily responsible for developing those forensic tools, Alex Levinson, has weighed in on the developments, specifically taking issue with several of yesterday's claims.
While forensics isn't in the forefront of technology headlines these days, that doesn't mean critical research isn't being done surrounding areas such as mobile devices. I have no problem with what Mr. Warden and Mr. Allan have created or presented on, but I do take issue with them making erroneous claims and not citing previously published work. I'm all for creative development and research, as long as it's honest.

For example, while Apple has noted in the past that it does collect information for specific purposes, it does so anonymously. Consequently, Levinson notes that claims that Apple is gathering information about user locations are overblown. Levinson also notes that the database of locations in iOS is neither hidden nor new as presented in yesterday's report, reporting that the file had existed in earlier versions of iOS as "h-cells.plist" but changed names and locations with iOS 4 in order to support background location services employed as part of the new multitasking features of iOS.

Finally, Levinson points to his own work, including contributions to a textbook describing exactly what the various database files are and how they are used. Levinson also developed and is continuing to work in his capacity as lead engineer Katana Forensics on Lantern, software for forensic professionals assisting them with pulling information from such files.

NAB restores computer glitch

NAB restores computer glitch

MILLIONS of National Australia Bank customers should finally be able to access money that was not available to them because of a computer glitch.

NAB alerted customers yesterday via Twitter messages and on its internet banking website that delays in the processing of payrolls and other transactions had occurred, resulting in some account balances not being up to date.

Commonwealth Bank (CBA), ANZ Banking Group, Westpac Banking Corporation, HSBC Australia and Suncorp Group customers were also affected.

This morning NAB said a computer glitch that prevented customers from withdrawing money from their accounts had been fixed, and that more than 130 banks would be opened today to assist customers who had been affected.

"We recognise and regret the inconvenience this delay may have caused for some customers," an NAB spokeswoman said in a statement.

"In recognition of this a number of NAB branches around Australia will be open today, we have increased staffing levels in NAB customer contact centres, and NAB business bankers will be available throughout the weekend."

In addition to opening bank doors on Saturday, NAB says customers experiencing difficulties can contact the bank on 13 22 65.

Failed again: Millions of NAB customers are without access to their pays after the bank's second major meltdown in less than six months. The National is working to fix the problem.

NAB says it has begun processing the accounts of millions of customers left without their pay by a crash.

The National will also open 100 banks today to assist customers it has failed to credit.

A bank spokeswoman said on Friday the fault that crashed its payments system had been identified and that customers of other banks whose accounts had been affected should also be restored overnight.

NAB's ATM network is still working and cash can be withdrawn from NAB accounts but many payroll and other transactions had not been processed as of last night.

Earlier on Friday, NAB alerted customers that delays in transaction processing had occurred and some customers' account balances may not be up to date.

Centrelink received calls from customers advising they had not received their scheduled payments.

According to a Bank of Queensland (BOQ) internal email to staff, NAB advised all financial institutions of technical difficulties.

Transactions to and from NAB accounts had not been processed and NAB was unable to confirm when the transactions would be updated, BOQ told its employees.

Commonwealth Bank (CBA), ANZ Banking Group, Westpac Banking Corporation, HSBC Australia and Suncorp Group confirmed their customers had been affected and they were working with NAB to fix the fault.

Delays in the processing of payrolls had occurred, with employees who banked with NAB not receiving their scheduled payments, the banks said.

NAB released a statement shortly after 7pm (AEST) which said it would have additional staff in its Customer Contact Centre over the weekend to answer customer queries.

"For affected business bank customers, our bankers will be available over the weekend to respond to customer inquiries.

"Business bankers will be available in NAB branches which are opening extended hours. Our contact centres will also open over the weekend."

The spokeswoman was unable to say how many of the delayed transactions would be completed overnight but said affected customers could check their accounts via ATMs or the internet from Friday evening.

NAB's payments glitch is its second in five months to spread across the Australian banking system and comes after NAB advised internet banking customers to expect delays on payments and bills during the Easter weekend.

An IT fault with NAB's payment processing system caused havoc last November when NAB was unable to process transactions, including EFTPOS and ATM transactions, for more than a week.

NAB's IT woes went global in 2005 when an IT upgrade for its two UK units resulted in the miscalculation of interest charges for customers with tracker and variable rate mortgages.

The NAB-owned Clydesdale and Yorkshire banks caused outrage amongst customers last year when they demanded customers make up the difference if they were undercharged.

NAB said in July that some of its UK customers would be offered refunds.

HSBC's local unit uses NAB to process its transactions in Australia.

An HSBC Australia spokesman declined to comment on whether HSBC would now review its processing arrangements as a result of glitch.

Sheen fires his 'torpedo of truth'

Torpedo away: After weeks of wild ups and downs actor Charlie Sheen is about to open his much-anticipated "My Violent Torpedo of Truth/Losing is Not an Option" tour.

CHARLIE Sheen has landed in Detroit in advance of the first show on his long-awaited stage show.

The actor will take the stage at Detroit's Fox Theatre before a sold-out crowd for his "My Violent Torpedo of Truth/Defeat Is Not An Option" tour. He will then travel to Chicago to entertain fans in the Windy City.

Sheen's two live-in 'goddesses', Bree Olsen and Natalie Kenly, are joining him on tour along with a bodyguard and several members of his entourage, that will oversee the logistics of his schedule and merchandising deals.

The former "Two and a Half Men" star will travel across the US and Canada for his 22-show tour that promises to give fans the "real story" behind his recent firing from the hit CBS show.

Given Sheen's penchant for the unexpected, sparse details were provided on what the show would actually entail.

"Will there be surprises? Will there be guests? Will there be mayhem? Will you ask questions? Will you laugh? Will you scream? Will you know the truth? WILL THERE BE MORE?!?!" the show's description on the Ticketmaster website said.

"This IS where you will hear the REAL story from the Warlock. Bring it. I dare you to keep up with me," Sheen added in the description.

Sheen's official website, which invites visitors to sign up "and start WINNING!" said one dollar from each ticket sold for his shows would be donated to the Red Cross' Japanese earthquake relief fund.

Casey Heynes breaks silence on bully video from Chifley College and thoughts of suicide

IN just one week, Casey Heynes went from having one friend to 230,000.

The 16-year-old Sydney boy became a global Internet sensation after he was filmed picking up a bully in the schoolyard and throwing him to the ground after being repeatedly punched in the face for being "overweight''.

During an interview with A Current Affair , Casey said he had been bullied almost every day at school and even contemplated suicide a year ago when the taunts became too much.

"I started putting myself down and all the crap just kept piling on,'' he said.

"That's when I contemplated suicide.''

A Year 10 student at Chifley College, St Marys, Casey said he was being targeted by a new gang of Year Seven students last Monday when he was attacked by Ritchard Gale.

Standing up against the wall with nowhere to move, Casey was punched repeatedly by Ritchard until he snapped - lifting the Year Seven bully over his shoulders and throwing him to the ground.

The footage was captured by another student, who filmed the incident on his mobile phone and then posted it on YouTube.

Casey said his outburst was a "build-up'' of more than three years of being attacked verbally and physically by other students.

"They used to slap me on the back of the head and said I was a fatty and to lose some weight.

"I've been duct taped to a pole before as well. They target me because I don't retaliate.

"I've never reacted that way before but everything built up inside me for three years...I just had enough. All I wanted is for it to stop.''

His celebrity status peaked once again after his interview last night, with social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter - which have more than 230,000 followers - labelling him "a hero''.

One blogger, Wayne McCoy, said minutes after the television interview: "You have inspired alot of kids who have and are being bullied. you have changed lives. well done mate. hopefully the bullies will learn thier lesson.''

Others, like Aidan Blackley, said: "Good on ya!!! ur a legend''.

Casey said he had been overwhelmed by the amount of people who backed him after last week's footage went viral.

"I've never had so much support before,'' he said.

"Nobody touches me and teases me anymore.''

Both Casey and Ritchard were suspended by the school following the incident, as well as the student who filmed it on their mobile phone.
