Not only can the iPad be used for entertainment in the way of gaming, videos, music, and internet surfing, but it can also be used as a way to keep in touch with others. Whether it be via instant messaging, email, or even text messaging, the iPad can manage to do all of them. In this FAQ series we will concentrate on questions that you might have concerning the iPad’s email and text messaging capabilities. Remember, to use the email and messaging functions, you will have to be connected to the internet. This can be done via a wireless network or through a 3G network, if you have the updated 3G version of the iPad.

What type of email accounts are supported by the iPad?

Standard POP3 and IMAP email accounts are supported on the iPad. This includes accounts from popular services like Yahoo, AOL, Gmail, and others. Apple’s MobileMe service is also supported. If you have a Microsoft Exchange account, you can use that with the iPad too.

What type of email attachments are supported by the iPad?

The iPad has you covered on all fronts when it comes to email attachments. Standard file attachments that are supported include PDF files, Microsoft Office files for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, text files, URLs, and Apple’s own Pages, Numbers, and Keynote files. Most standard picture attachments are supported, such as JPEG, GIF, and TIFF files. You can even open up audio attachments like MP3, AAC, WAV, and AIFF files. All you have to do to open the attachments is tap on them, and the iPad will take care of the rest.

I want to send someone an email attachment of a video I like. How long can it be?

If you want to send a video to somebody via email, you are limited to a 5MB clip. If you translate that into length, it equals to approximately one minute of video. That’s not very long, but it still beats not being able to send videos at all. When you do attach it to an email message, the iPad will convert the video to a compact 480 x 360 resolution.

I just took some great photos and want to email them to a friend. Will they be the same resolution when I send them?

The answer to this depends on how you send them. If you want to maintain the photos’ original resolution, you will have to copy and then paste them into the email body. If you decide to send them as attachments, the iPad will automatically adjust their resolution for sending. The adjusted photos will have a resolution of roughly three megapixels, and their sizes will be converted to either 2,048 x 1,536 or 2,048 x 1,364.

Stay tuned for part 2 of this series, where we will continue to answer some questions regarding the iPad’s messaging capabilities.
